Rower Malcolm Howard finishes sixth overall at World Cup 2 - 2010 Rowing World Cup 2 - Munich (GER) 18-20 June June 21st, 2010
Canada's only entry in the Munich World Cup this weekend finished sixth overall after today's men's single final.
Facing an experienced group of scullers, Malcolm Howard of Victoria, B.C. finished sixth in 7:23.34. Czech sculler Ondrej Synek won his second consecutive World Cup - his gold-medal time today was 7:00.57. Marcel Hacker of Germany picked up the silver in 7:02.32; Norway's Olaf Tufte was third in 7:05.88, followed by Sweden's Lassi Karonen (7:06.78) and Great Britain's Alan Campbell (7:13.86) in fifth.
"Malcolm will take many lessons from today's race," said Rowing Canada Aviron High Performance Director Peter Cookson. "Although it was not the outcome he wanted, he has gained some valuable experience that will help him going forward."
Up until last year, Howard was a member of the powerful Canadian men's eight that included a gold-medal performance at the Beijing Olympics. He is now making progress toward his goal to row in the single at the Olympic level. The men's single event had the highest number of entries at this regatta with a total of 29.
The next World Cup is in Lucerne, Switzerland, from July 9 to 11. Canada will have several crews (to be announced) at the third World Cup.
