June 21st, 2010

Chevrolet Making Dreams Possible Club Coaching Grants

Coaches play a critical role in the experience of young athletes and this national funding initiative will strengthen their impact and contribute to the success of sport clubs throughout the country.

One hundred grants of $2,000 each will be awarded each year to allow sport clubs/local sport associations to host coach training and education activities in support of community sport programs. There will be two application deadlines annually: February and September. There will be up to 50 grants for each application wave.

Target Audience:

Club coaches and their young aspiring Canadian athletes.

Eligibility:

This grant is open to sport-specific clubs, local sport associations, and/or leagues, operating at the community level and directing the majority of their programs towards children and youth (e.g. minor hockey associations, alpine ski clubs, soccer clubs, etc.).

For the purposes of this application, the term “club” is used to represent any local sport association operating at the community level.

Provincial/territorial sport organizations and national sport organizations are NOT eligible to apply.

Clubs will be able to develop and implement a season plan to train their coaches and improve the skills of their athletes.

This plan may include:

  • National Coaching Certification Program workshops

  • Technical/tactical clinics for coaches and athletes

  • Coaching seminars

  • Web-based resources

    Clubs must:

  • Be affiliated with the recognized provincial/territorial sport organization and/or national sport organization of an Olympic or Paralympic sport.

  • Be incorporated as a not-for-profit club.

  • Direct the majority of their programs towards children and youth under 18 years of age.

Note: Clubs that have been successfully granted the Chevrolet Club Coaching Grant must wait one year prior to applying for an additional grant.

    Selection Criteria:

Eligible clubs will be selected based on the following weighting factors:

  • # of community sport participants at the club

  • # of coaches participating in the event

  • Quality of the training program design

  • A description of the impact of the training for the club

  • NCCP Certification level of the head coach

  • Geographical distribution

    Selection Process:

CAC will send out a call for applications through the network of national/provincial/territorial sport organizations, and through www.coach.ca. The application must be submitted by the president, program director or head coach of the club.

CAC will review all applications and short-list candidates for final approval.
