Olympians and all-stars team up in corporate relay
July 29th, 2010

Seven Olympians, three mascots, a CFL commissioner, a member of the Miami Heat and a CFL star-turned-bobsledder headline the Corporate & Celebrity Relay Challenge, presented by KPMG.

The event runs in conjunction with Day 2 of the Canadian track and field championships – 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at the University of Toronto’s Varsity Centre. 20 corporate teams, one of which includes the likes of Carlton the Bear and the Raptor, are participating in a warm-up and mini-relay clinic, conducted by national team coaches, before they step into their lanes and compete for the KPMG Cup.

Each corporate relay team will be anchored by a celebrity runner. Confirmed anchors include: Olympic champion hurdler, Mark McKoy; Toronto native and NBA star, Jamaal Magloire; CFL all-star and Olympic bobsledder, Jesse Lumsden; Toronto mayoral candidate George Smitherman; CBC Sports personality Scott Russell; CFL commissioner, Mark Cohon; Olympic rower, Joel Finlay; Olympian and eight-time national high jump champion, Milt Ottey; Canadian 1500m record holder and three-time Olympian, Kevin Sullivan; 200m Canadian record holder and three-time Olympian, Atlee Mahorn; Olympic relay silver medalist, Molly Killingbeck; and five-time Olympian and relay silver medalist, Charmaine Crooks.

“KPMG proudly supports the 2010 Canadian Track & Field Championships and the Corporate & Celebrity Relay Challenge,” said Beth Wilson, Managing Partner of KPMG in the Greater Toronto Area. “Athletes possess many of the characteristics that are integral to KPMG’s own corporate values: leadership, commitment, perseverance, a deep passion for what they do, and an unending quest for excellence. We’re honoured to cheer them on.”

Participating teams are also helping sponsor 1,000 youth from Toronto priority neighbourhoods who are now able to attend the Canadian track and field championships and watch some of Canada’s premier athletes compete for gold. All proceeds from the event will go to the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Physical Education and Health, with a portion of funds going to the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport, a host venue for the upcoming 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games.

The 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games are also proud supporters of the Canadian track and field championships. The 2010 Canadian Track & Field Championships run from July 28 – 31 and tickets can be purchased through TicketBreak.
